Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

This time of year we all get overloaded with the stress of buying our loved ones the perfect gifts and caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. With all of that going on, we overlook the importance of the holiday season and often don’t think of the ones who have anyone to spend Christmas with or the ones that have anything at all.

I’ve come up with a list of a few ideas of ways that we could give back this season. The best gifts could be the smallest ones of all, they could be the most meaningful and can make someone’s whole holiday. So, even if just for a moment you think about it or take some time out of your day to do some of these things, pause from being apart of the madness and rushing out to buy the biggest gifts or making your own wish lists and help someone in need.

  1. Bake Christmas cookies and/or casseroles and share them with your neighbors. Who doesn’t love a warm meal that they don’t have to worry about preparing or holiday treats?
  2. Buy blankets for nursing homes. Does it not break anyone’s heart to think about the old people who don’t have family to come and visit them over the holidays? C r y i n g.
  3. Visit a nursing home. Most old people enjoy visitors. Take them Christmas cards & decorations! If you and a few family members or friends want to go together, you can always sing them a few Christmas carols and have them join in. They would truly adore this!
  4. Pack stockings for the homeless. How helpful could this little thoughtful gift be to someone who has nothing? Pack them full of granola bars, a water bottle, gloves, socks, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
  5. Clean out the toy box… The kiddos can’t play with them all forever. There are plenty of babies that don’t have anything to play with or wake up to on Christmas morning. You can also donate to your local children’s hospital!
  6. Adopt a family. As I mentioned, we know that there are a lot of babies who wake up to nothing on Christmas morning. Even though presents aren’t the reason for the season… you know it’s heartbreaking for a child to wake up and feel like Santa skipped their house. If the parents are just financially unable to provide Christmas gifts, you have to know that it’s heartbreaking for them as well. Help make another child smile this year.
  7. Donate to a food bank.
  8. Take lunches to people who work over the holidays! Police officers, fire departments, nurses and to hospitals.
  9. Donate old coats!
  10. *Tearjerker* Donate blankies, food and pet toys to the local animal shelter. DOGS NEED CHRISTMAS LOVE TOO, O K.

Some people even “adopt” families and children in other countries to make sure they have toys, clothing and goodies as well. I know my family has done this in the past and that’s great too! I just want to remind everyone that your very own community needs help too. Not even just around the holidays. There are many unfed babies, children with no coats, no toys and neglected kiddos in this country that could even be your neighbor. As a Psychology student and seeing inside school districts and learning statistics about the community I live in, I’ve learned that there is a lot you can do right there in your own hometown.

Spread the holiday cheer to someone in need! They will appreciate it more than you know.
