A Freshman’s Guide To College Apparel

We’re about to hit the end of second semester of your senior year, so congrats incoming freshmen! You’re about to dive into the real world, which means you’re probably trying to figure out the best college apparel that’ll keep you from looking like you just left high school.

First things first, don’t try so hard. The last thing you want to do is go crazy trying to look as hip as possible. Next, you worked hard to get into a particular school, so you likely are a fan & want to show your support. Nothing wrong with that, but you do need to be aware of a few things regarding college apparel you might not have gotten the 4-1-1 during the campus tour.

Here are a few more tips:

Budget Bins Are Your Friend…kinda

Nearly every college bookstore has a bargain bin with shirts & caps that are being phased out of circulation. This usually means you can find a deal on some college-related clothing that’s great for the broke college kid. That said, don’t just buy something because it’s available. Otherwise, you spent money you didn’t need to for something you likely won’t wear much…or at all.

Moderation

As with many other things you’ll encounter in college, wearing the right amount of college-related gear is all about moderation. Don’t go overboard. The last thing you want to do is come off as a tourist.

School Colors, but…

Every college has their official set of colors, which makes their branding easier across products. More importantly, though, they clearly signify to anyone that the person wearing said colors is a student or a fan. Remember the moderation thing? Try to find school shirts or hats that are a little off-kilter. Pastels or throwback gear are a great start. Heck, if you can find it, vintage designs are huge when they’re original. If you’re a legacy, you’ve likely got an in on this end.

Get Creative

A number of years ago, students from a Florida college received national attention when they decided to ‘zhuzh’ up some school t-shirts, catching the eye of a TV camera during a football game. Needless to say, their creative lilt on a basic shirt made for some serious impact. Try a little ‘zhuzhing’ yourself & stand out from the crowd.

Probably the main thing you need to remember is that if you’re gonna go the school spirit route & wear some cool college gear, you gotta think beyond the bookstore. If you need the right book for Psych 101 or are making a last-minute trip to get a blue book (or green if you kick it with the environmental crowd), the bookstore is perfect. But for wearing something cool & unique that shows off your school spirit? Not so much.
