When you’re cheering on the Gamecocks in Williams-Brice Stadium on gameday, there’s a pretty good chance you’re not looking around & thinking, ‘Boy, there really are a lot of South Carolina hats around here.’ When the Garnet, Black, and White are doing their thing, fans are rocking their hats proudly, letting everyone in the SEC know who is in the house.
But what’s in a hat? Can a hat, specifically a South Carolina hat, really do a whole lot more than just, well, BE? Well, as the University of South Carolina seal says, “Emollit Mores Nec Sinit Esse Feros”. Roughly translated from Latin, it means it’s time to get to learning a bit about South Carolina hats:
Yeah, The Jokes – The school has a mascot named Cocky, a large cartoony version of a gamecock. Do we really need to break down why there are a lot of jokes associated with the hats & other sports gear associated with the school?
Kinda NSFW – Jokes aside, the school does tend to lean into some of the jokes. As such, some hats tend to PROMINENTLY showcase nicknames for the South Carolina mascot in large typeface compared to other text on the hat.
Not Just School Pride – Even though most people would think that a South Carolina Gamecocks hat would be all about school pride, it’s not. You’re carrying the pride of the entire state on your head.
Subdued & Quiet – Some hats carry fairly small logos, often being considered more cute & even blending in a little into the rest of the hat itself.
Loud & Proud – Remember the whole NSFW/joke part of things? Yeah. Some hats are brash, garnet as all get-out, and emblazoned with a sizable logo (insert joke here) & block letter C.
Women’s Hats – Women’s sport gear can be just as brazen & fun as the men.
Step on Toes – Of course, no South Carolina sports gear would be worth talking about without pointing out their willingness to rock UNC colors…just because.
USC or UofSC – Wanna start a fight in South Carolina? Start a conversation about whether the school should be called USC or UofSC. Of course, a look at the school’s website will settle the argument quite easily — it’s UofSC, period.
Check Out the Vintage Market – Want to find some cool hat designs? Look for the old-school stuff online or in thrift shops.
See? South Carolina hats are WAY more interesting than you could have imagined. So, whether you’re old-school & only recognize Sir Big Spur or maybe you’ve finally started to accept Cocky. It could be you’re a simple person & all you look forward to is Chicken Finger Wednesday. No matter the reason, just remember to rock your South Carolina hat with the pride it deserves.
