So you’ve made it to Texas Tech, CONGRATULATIONS AND GUNS UP!

The Saddle Tramps are an all male student organization that supports men’s athletics. This organization was started by former Tech student Arch Lamb in 1936.  These Red Raiders wrap Will Rogers and Soapspuds with crepe paper before all big home games, for the legendary “Bell Circle” before kickoff. They are part of all parades and campus events, and ring the Victory Bells after Red Raider victories.

The Masked Rider is one of the most well known symbols of Texas Tech. He or she can be seen charging onto the field before all home games. The first official Masked Rider was Joe Kirk Fulton in 1954. He wore Levi’s, a red shirt, black cape, and was mounted on an all black horse.

Once you’ve participated in all of the traditions that Texas Tech has to offer, it’s time for you to explore your new city.

The first place you need to visit is Prairie Dog Town. This is one of the coolest places to go and watch the smallest little animals in their natural habitat. This was the first protected prairie dog colony of it’s kind.  Located in the middle of Mackenzie Park, it’s a great place to spend your day off from class.

One other must see is the Stars and Stripes Drive-In Theater. This is one of the coolest places to visit on a low-key night. You pay one price for two movies and you get to sit in the comfort of your own car! Relax and snack as you kick back and take a little ride back to the past.

One of the best restaurants right across from campus is Chimy’s. Their tacos, cheese fries (with bacon and ranch), and fajitas are to die for. Stop by on your way home from class for a quick pick me up or make it your destination for a night out. You’ll be sure to see all of your best friends and make some new ones while you’re at it!

If you love Christmas time, you’ll love Carol of Lights. This is the best way for you and your closest friends to get together and kick off the holiday season. The night starts with a parade, carols and by the end of the lighting ceremony, the 13 buildings surrounding Memorial Circle are lit up with red, orange, and white lights.  It’s like a Christmas fairytale.

These are just a couple of the fun things to do while in Lubbock, Texas. Be sure to branch out and find other traditions that the town has to offer. And never forget these will be the best four years of your life, Wreck ‘Em!
