The Seminole’s Guide To Florida State Hat Etiquette

No doubt that if you came of age in the 90s, you saw Florida State hats everywhere. And not just in the Florida. All over the country, the Seminoles were gaining attention for being a football powerhouse. Two national championships, multiple trips to championship games, an unrivaled ranking in the Top 5 across of all college football, and winning more games than anyone in a decade. Yeah…Florida State was something else.

FSU Gear Goes Viral

And who could forget the gameday telecast (in primetime, no less) that brought the Florida State Cowgirls into the collective consciousness of America. This small group of young ladies took basic FSU college apparel & REALLY amped up the ‘spirit’. Through it all, though, there was one thing present — Florida State hats. Some folks rocked old-school 90s lids that were, well, a product of that kooky decade. Others were always looking for the latest FSU gear to wear everywhere they went.

The RIGHT (?) Way to Wear Hat…

But it’s 2022, a perfect time to look back & wonder about the etiquette that would go along with all this hat wearing. Cap on, cap off, cap over heart, that whole Emily Post-type spiel. Does it really matter? In a world where there are bigger things going on, does having a level of ‘hat etiquette’ serve any real purpose?

Let’s consider the following:

Wearing A Hat Indoors

For generations, it’s been said that wearing any kind of hat inside is seen as disrespectful. However, this is a bit antiquated & old-fashioned. Plus, if you’re a ‘Nole outside, that ain’t stopping inside.

Paying Respects at the Sod Cemetery

Considering the place is nothing more than an open tongue-in-cheek flex against teams who got a big ‘L’ against FSU, don’t sweat wearing a hat here.

Westcott Fountain Birthday Tradition

Getting tossed in the fountain on midnight when you turn 21 is a ‘tradition’, but a kibosh on the whole thing has been in place lately for safety reasons. You’ll have plenty of time to do dumb things as an adult, so skip the fountain & wear your ‘Noles hat celebrating out on the town.

“Unconquered”

Few places are as ideal to wear your favorite FSU hat than at a spear lighting at this amazing piece of art outside of Doak Campbell Stadium.

So, what’s the final word on Florida State hats & etiquette? Basically, let your school spirit show anywhere you want. But be sure to have a cool hat to rock. This means checking out the unique offerings we’ve got here at Barefoot Campus Outfitter. Trust us — this ain’t your parents’ gear stop!
